What zyBooks does

zyBooks makes interactive online textbooks built around auto-graded participation and challenge activities, zyLabs programming assignments and exams. Students do the work at learn.zybooks.com, often by opening assignment links inside Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle or D2L Brightspace, which send each point they earn to the course gradebook. An outage therefore lands on homework, labs and exams that usually have a deadline attached.

What an outage looks like

learn.zybooks.com loads slowly or not at all, or activities fail to render. Advanced zyLabs will not open, which has happened when the Firebase service they rely on failed, while Classic zyLabs code runs time out. Scores stop reaching Canvas or Blackboard even though zyBooks shows the points. A Cloudflare outage has also left the whole platform unresponsive.

What to do about it

Check status.zybooks.com, which lists learn.zybooks.com, Classic zyLabs, Advanced zyLabs, the Exams system and the zyBooks.com home pages as separate rows. If only score posting fails, check your LMS status too: your work is still recorded in zyBooks. Tell your instructor before the deadline, with a screenshot, because work done after the due date does not count.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

Why is my zyBooks score not showing in Canvas?

Usually because Canvas or another LMS could not accept the score, not because zyBooks lost it. During past Canvas outages zyBooks posted that work was still recorded and that scores could be sent once Canvas was back, by continuing the assignment or clicking Submit score to LMS. You can also send points manually from the Assignments tab in zyBooks.

When does zyBooks do scheduled maintenance?

On dates fixed at the start of each calendar year and listed in the zyBooks help center article on scheduled maintenance. Windows typically run from 8 to 10pm Pacific time, with intermittent interruptions rather than a clean shutdown. Details go up on the status page shortly before each window, so avoid planning to finish an assignment during one.

Is zyBooks down or is it my browser?

If every row on the status page is operational, start with your browser. zyBooks advises reloading the page, then clearing the cache, then trying an incognito window, because ad blockers and other add-ons can break its interactive content. A different browser is the next step. If nothing works, email support@zybooks.com with a screenshot of the browser console.

Why won't Advanced zyLabs load when the rest of zyBooks works?

Advanced zyLabs is its own system with its own row on the status page, and it depends on Firebase, a Google service. In June 2025 a Google Cloud outage made Advanced zyLabs fail to load intermittently while the textbook itself stayed up. Check the Advanced zyLabs row, and Google Cloud's status, before troubleshooting your own setup.

Will a zyBooks outage get me a deadline extension?

Not automatically. The zyBooks help center says work completed after the due date does not count toward the assignment and is not sent to Canvas, and it describes no automatic extension. Contact your instructor before the deadline with a screenshot of the error and the time it happened. A matching incident on the status page backs up your request.

How we measure this

We request zyBooks's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where zyBooks publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
