WordPress.com is a managed hosting platform for WordPress websites, run by Automattic. It powers millions of blogs and websites with free and paid plans that include hosting, themes, and plugins. WordPress.com is distinct from WordPress.org (the open-source software) in that it provides a fully hosted, managed experience.

What an outage looks like

When WordPress.com is down, blogs and websites hosted on the platform may return error pages or load very slowly. The WordPress.com editor and dashboard may be inaccessible, preventing content updates. Sites using custom domains on WordPress.com will also be affected since the hosting infrastructure is shared.

What to do about it

Check automatticstatus.com for incident reports on WordPress.com infrastructure. If you have a self-hosted WordPress.org site, a WordPress.com outage does not affect you. For WordPress.com users, the Jetpack plugin's CDN features may continue serving cached content during brief outages.

No, they are different. WordPress.org is the open-source software you can install on any server. WordPress.com is a managed hosting service by Automattic. A WordPress.com outage only affects sites hosted on WordPress.com, not self-hosted WordPress.org sites.
Will my WordPress.com blog posts be lost during an outage?
No, published posts and saved drafts are stored in WordPress.com's databases and are preserved during outages. However, if you're actively editing when the outage occurs, unsaved changes to a draft may be lost. WordPress.com has an autosave feature that minimizes this risk.
Does a WordPress.com outage affect WooCommerce stores?
WooCommerce stores hosted on WordPress.com will be fully affected during a platform outage. Customers won't be able to browse products or complete purchases. Self-hosted WooCommerce stores on your own server are not affected by WordPress.com outages.

  • We request WordPress's public endpoint every 30 minutes from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 18 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where WordPress publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
