What Untappd does

Untappd is a social network for beer, where drinkers check in what they are drinking, rate it and earn badges, while bars and breweries publish live menus through Untappd for Business. That business side puts it on tap lists and digital screens in venues, so an outage is visible to customers who have never used the app.

What an outage looks like

Check-ins fail to post or appear to succeed and then vanish from the feed. Badges and ratings do not register. Search returns no beers, so a check-in cannot be completed at all. For venues, Untappd for Business menus fail to load on digital displays and embedded web menus, leaving a blank screen or a stale tap list on the wall.

What to do about it

Check status.untappd.com, which reports the consumer app and API, the website and short URLs separately from Untappd for Business and Insights, so a venue menu failing does not mean check-ins are affected. Venues should have a printed or whiteboard tap list as a fallback, since a blank screen behind the bar is worse than no screen.

Did my check-in save during the outage?

Check-ins the app confirmed are stored and appear in your feed. One that errored was probably never created, and the app does not reliably queue them for later. Rather than checking in again immediately and risking a duplicate on your profile, look at your own feed once the status page clears and add it then.

Why is the tap list screen in my bar blank?

Untappd for Business powers menus on digital displays and embedded web menus, and it is reported separately from the consumer app. When it fails, the screen shows nothing rather than the last known list, which looks like broken hardware to customers. A printed fallback is worth keeping behind the bar for exactly this.

Do badges earned during an outage still count?

Badges are awarded from check-ins, so if the check-in did not register, neither did the badge. There is no way to claim one retroactively for a beer you drank but did not log. For a limited-time badge tied to an event, that is a genuine loss, and the event window rarely gets extended.

Is Untappd down or is the beer missing from the database?

An unlisted beer produces an empty search result while the rest of the app works normally, which is a database gap rather than an incident. Check status.untappd.com. If the app is healthy, the beer may need adding to the database, which is a different process from waiting out an outage.

Does an outage affect Untappd Insights for venues?

Insights is listed as its own component and can fail while menus and check-ins work. Reporting gaps during an incident mean the data for that window is unreliable rather than that trade was slow. Avoid drawing conclusions about a night's performance from figures collected while the component was degraded.

How we measure this

We request Untappd's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where Untappd publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
