Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Twitch does

Twitch is a live streaming platform where people broadcast games, music and talk shows while viewers watch and chat in real time. Streamers earn through subscriptions and bits, and many communities treat its chat as a permanent hangout. Twitch runs its own login service, so an identity failure can lock viewers and broadcasters out even when video itself is fine.

What an outage looks like

Sign-in fails on the site, the mobile app and console apps, often after the page appears to load normally. Chat disconnects and stops accepting messages while a stream keeps playing, because Twitch tracks chat and video as separate systems. Broadcasters see ingest drop and their streaming software report a lost connection. Subscription and bits purchases fail at checkout.

What to do about it

Check status.twitch.com, which reports Login, Web, Chat, Video for watching, Video for broadcasting and Purchases separately, so you can tell a chat problem from a playback one. Broadcasters should leave their streaming software running rather than restarting it, since most encoders retry the connection automatically. Viewers can open a second channel to see whether the failure is platform-wide.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Twitch is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Twitch outage FAQ

Is Twitch down for everyone or just me?
Open a second channel from a different streamer, and if that also fails the problem is broader than one broadcaster. Twitch's status page lists Video for watching separately from Chat and Login, so a working stream with dead chat still counts as a partial outage. The measurement above probes Twitch's login endpoint from several regions at once, separating a local fault from a platform one.
Does Twitch error 2000 or 4000 mean Twitch is down?
Usually not. Both are far more often client-side player errors than platform ones. Error 2000 is a network error between your browser and Twitch's video servers, and 4000 commonly appears when another application is holding your audio device. Clearing cookies, closing other media players and trying a different browser resolves most of them. Check the status page before assuming an outage.
Can I still stream if Twitch is down?
It depends which part failed. Twitch reports Video for broadcasting separately from Video for watching, so ingest can accept your stream while viewers cannot load it, or the reverse. If ingest is affected your encoder will keep retrying and reconnect once the platform recovers. Read the broadcasting component specifically rather than assuming a viewer-side report applies to you.
Why does Twitch chat break while the video keeps playing?
Chat runs on a different system from video delivery, and Twitch's status page lists them as separate components for that reason. Chat holds a persistent connection that drops the moment its service has trouble, while video arrives in buffered segments that keep playing for a while from what your player already downloaded. That is why chat usually appears to fail first.
How long do Twitch outages usually last?
Twitch does not publish a target resolution time. Its status page keeps a dated incident history going back weeks, which is the best available guide to how long past problems have run. During an incident Twitch posts updates there as it investigates, and you can subscribe by email or SMS rather than refreshing. The measurement above updates continuously from multiple regions.

How we measure this

  • We request Twitch's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Twitch publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
