What TaxJar does

TaxJar is a sales tax automation service for online sellers. It calculates tax at checkout through an API, imports transactions from ecommerce platforms and marketplaces, produces return-ready reports broken down by jurisdiction, and can file returns automatically through AutoFile. Stores selling across many US states depend on it for both live checkout rates and filing deadlines.

What an outage looks like

A calculation failure shows up at checkout, where carts either error or fall back to zero or stale tax on orders that should be taxed. TaxJar splits its API into Tax Calculations, Tax Rates and Transaction Push, so live rates can fail while transaction imports continue. Reporting and AutoFile are separate again, so a filing problem can exist while checkout is completely unaffected.

What to do about it

Check status.taxjar.com and identify which API component is affected. If Tax Calculations is down, decide deliberately what your checkout should do rather than letting it default, because charging no tax on taxable orders creates a liability you settle later. If only Reporting or AutoFile is affected, checkout is fine, but watch filing dates and confirm returns actually submitted once the incident closes.

TaxJar outage FAQ

My checkout is charging no sales tax. Is TaxJar down?
Check the Tax Calculations API row on status.taxjar.com first. Many integrations fall back to zero tax when the calculation call fails, which looks like a configuration mistake but is really an upstream outage. Decide in advance whether your store should block checkout or proceed untaxed during such a failure, because the default is rarely the choice you would make.
Does a TaxJar outage stop my returns being filed?
Only if AutoFile is the affected component. TaxJar reports TaxJar AutoFile separately from its calculation APIs and from Reporting, so filing can be disrupted while checkout works normally, or the reverse. If a filing deadline falls near an incident, confirm the return actually submitted once the component is marked resolved rather than assuming it caught up.
Will orders placed during the outage still import into TaxJar?
Transaction Push API is its own component, so imports can continue while calculations fail, or stop while everything else works. Do not assume the backlog resolves itself: once the incident closes, compare order counts in your store against what TaxJar shows for the same period, and push anything missing before it affects a filing.
What is the difference between the Tax Rates and Tax Calculations APIs?
TaxJar reports them as separate components. Tax Calculations handles the tax owed on a specific order, while Tax Rates serves rate lookups for a location. An integration may use one, the other, or both, so identifying which endpoint your platform calls tells you whether an incident on a given row actually affects your checkout.
Is TaxJar down for everyone or just my store?
Check status.taxjar.com, then call the API directly with a test request rather than going through your storefront. If the API responds and your store still fails, the problem is in your integration, your credentials or your platform's connector. A genuine incident shows on the relevant component row and affects all merchants using that endpoint.

How we measure this

  • We request TaxJar's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where TaxJar publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
