Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Strava does

Strava is a fitness tracking service where runners and cyclists record activities and share them with a following. Activities arrive both from the phone app and from synced hardware such as watches and bike computers, so an outage affects the people opening the app and the devices quietly trying to upload behind it.

What an outage looks like

The app opens to an empty or stale feed and will not refresh. Finished activities stay stuck as pending uploads instead of appearing on your profile. Watches and bike computers syncing through partner integrations queue their workouts rather than delivering them. Segment matches and kudos lag behind, so an activity can appear without its usual segment results.

What to do about it

Check status.strava.com, which lists Upload and the API separately from strava.com and the mobile applications, and which also reports AWS as a dependency. Recorded activities are held on your phone or watch until the upload succeeds, so do not delete them from the device to force a retry. Queued uploads generally clear on their own.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Strava is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Strava outage FAQ

Is Strava down or is my activity just not uploading?
status.strava.com lists Upload as its own component, separate from the website and mobile apps, so an upload can fail while the feed loads perfectly well. If Upload is green and only your activity is stuck, check that your phone has a working connection and that the recording was actually stopped and saved rather than left running.
Will I lose my run or ride if Strava is down?
No. The activity is recorded on your phone or on your watch and stays there until it uploads successfully. Strava being unreachable delays the upload rather than discarding the workout. The one genuine risk is deleting the activity from the device to force a retry, which removes the only copy before it has been transferred.
Why has my Garmin or Apple Watch activity not appeared on Strava?
Synced devices deliver through partner integrations that queue when Strava cannot accept uploads. The workout usually sits complete in the device's own app while waiting. Once Upload is healthy again the backlog delivers, often several activities at once. Manually re-syncing before the status page clears tends to add duplicates rather than speed anything up.
Do segment leaderboards and kudos update after an outage?
They catch up, though not always immediately. Segment matching runs after an activity is processed, so an activity uploaded during a degraded period can appear without its segments and gain them later. Kudos and comments given while the feed was stale may take time to reconcile. Neither is usually worth re-doing by hand.
Does a Strava outage affect the mobile app and the website equally?
Not necessarily. Strava reports Mobile applications and strava.com as separate components, so one can fail while the other works. The API is tracked separately again, which matters if you use third-party tools that read your data. Checking which component is affected explains why the app is broken while the site looks fine.

How we measure this

  • We request Strava's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 6 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Strava publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
