Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What SmugMug does

SmugMug hosts portfolios and client galleries for professional and serious amateur photographers, with print sales and client proofing built in. Photographers point their own domains at it and send galleries to paying clients, so an outage affects a business's public face and its delivery to customers at once.

What an outage looks like

Galleries fail to load for clients, who see an error on a link the photographer sent rather than the photographs. Photo and video serving fails, so images break across a portfolio site while the page structure renders. Uploads stall partway through a large set. Search returns nothing, and print orders cannot be placed through the gallery.

What to do about it

Check status.smugmug.com, which reports Web, Photos and Videos, Uploads, Search and support pages as separate components, so a failed upload does not always mean client galleries are down. Tell clients directly if a delivery gallery is affected, since they will otherwise assume the link is wrong. Pause large uploads rather than restarting them.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says SmugMug is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 18 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

SmugMug outage FAQ

Are my photos safe during a SmugMug outage?
Photos already uploaded are stored and become temporarily unreachable rather than lost. The genuine exposure is an upload interrupted partway through a set, where some files transferred and others did not. Keeping your own originals rather than treating any host as the only copy is the practice that makes an outage merely inconvenient.
My portfolio is on a custom domain. Does it go down too?
Yes. A custom domain points at SmugMug's servers, so an incident affects your branded site exactly as it affects a smugmug.com address. Visitors see an error on what appears to be your own website, which is why a longer incident is worth acknowledging somewhere clients will see, such as social media or email.
Can clients still view a gallery I sent them?
Not while Web or photo serving is affected: the link fails and they see an error rather than a queue. Clients generally assume the link is broken rather than that the host is down, and often do not report it. Messaging clients directly during an incident preserves the impression of a working business.
Do print orders placed during an outage go through?
An order that completed is recorded and processes normally. One that errored at checkout may not exist, and the client will not know which. Rather than asking them to order again immediately, check your orders once the status page clears, since a duplicate print order means a refund and a return.
Should I restart a large upload that failed?
Not while Uploads is reported unhealthy. Restarting begins the set again and can duplicate the files that did transfer, leaving you to delete them individually from a gallery. Wait for the component to recover, check what actually landed, and upload only the remainder rather than the whole set.

How we measure this

  • We request SmugMug's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where SmugMug publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
