Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Riot Games does

Riot Games operates League of Legends, Valorant and Teamfight Tactics as live services, with matchmaking, ranked ladders and account systems behind them. Competitive play depends on a stable session for its whole length, so an outage does not merely block logging in: it abandons matches that count towards a player's rank.

What an outage looks like

The client fails to sign in or hangs on the loading screen after patching. Matchmaking queues never find a game, or a found game fails to launch. Matches disconnect mid-play and reconnection loops without succeeding. The store and battle pass fail to load while play works, and friends lists show everyone offline when they are not.

What to do about it

Check status.riotgames.com, Riot's own service status page, which covers its games and reports by region and shard rather than globally, so confirm the one your account plays on. Avoid queueing for ranked during a known incident, since a game abandoned to a server fault can still carry a loss and a leaver penalty.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Riot Games is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 18 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

Riot Games outage FAQ

Will I get a leaver penalty for a game lost to an outage?
Sometimes, which is why queueing during a known incident is worth avoiding. Riot's systems record a disconnect without knowing the cause, so penalties and rank losses can apply automatically. Riot does sometimes reverse these after a confirmed incident, but that is a manual decision rather than a guarantee, and appeals take time.
Which region should I check on Riot's status page?
The one your account is on, since Riot runs separate shards and an incident usually affects one rather than all. A player on a European shard can be unaffected by an outage that stops North American play entirely. This also explains why friends in other regions insist the game is fine when it plainly is not.
Is Riot down or do I need to patch?
A pending patch usually blocks the client with an explicit update prompt rather than a failure, and repairs itself once the download finishes. An outage gives sign-in failures or endless queues instead. Check status.riotgames.com first; if it is clear, running the client's built-in repair resolves more local problems than reinstalling does.
Do purchases made during an outage still arrive?
Purchases that completed are recorded and the content appears once the store component recovers, though sometimes with a delay. A purchase that errored may not have been taken. Rather than buying again, check your account and payment method once the status page is clear, since duplicate purchases need a support ticket to refund.
Why can I play but not see my friends online?
Chat and friends services run separately from the game servers themselves, so social features fail while matches work perfectly. Everyone appearing offline is a common symptom of that split rather than evidence that nobody is playing. It generally resolves on its own and does not affect your ability to queue.

How we measure this

  • We request Riot Games's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Riot Games publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
