What Proton Mail does

Proton Mail is an encrypted email service from Proton, sold alongside a VPN, calendar, drive and password manager under one account. People choose it to keep mail out of advertising systems, and often use it as a primary address, so an outage cuts off correspondence rather than a secondary inbox.

What an outage looks like

The web application fails to load or hangs after the decryption step, which looks like a stalled login. Incoming mail stops arriving without any bounce being visible to you. Outgoing messages sit in the outbox and fail to send. Proton Bridge disconnects, so desktop clients such as Thunderbird or Outlook report authentication errors against a local account.

What to do about it

Check status.proton.me, which reports Proton Mail, VPN, Calendar, Drive, Pass and SimpleLogin separately, and splits Mail into web, incoming mail, outgoing mail, Bridge, mobile and desktop apps. Incoming mail is queued by sending servers and generally delivers after recovery rather than bouncing, so avoid asking senders to resend during the incident.

Will I lose emails sent to me during a Proton outage?
Almost never. Sending mail servers retry delivery for an extended period when a destination is unreachable, so messages queue on their side and arrive once Proton recovers. Asking people to resend usually produces duplicates rather than rescuing anything. A genuine bounce, which would be visible to the sender, is the only case worth acting on.
Is Proton Mail down or is Bridge the problem?
Bridge is listed as its own component under Proton Mail. If webmail loads but Thunderbird or Outlook cannot authenticate, Bridge is the more likely cause, and restarting it locally often resolves it once the service is healthy. Check both the Bridge component and the web application before troubleshooting your desktop client's settings.
Does a Proton outage affect Proton VPN too?
Not necessarily. Proton reports Mail, VPN, Calendar, Drive and Pass as separate services, and each fails independently. A VPN incident can leave mail untouched, and the reverse is common. Since they share one account, people often assume a single outage; the status page is explicit about which service is actually affected.
Can I still read old messages when Proton Mail is down?
Only through a client that already holds them. Mail is stored encrypted on Proton's servers, so the web application cannot show anything while the service is unreachable. Desktop or mobile clients synced through Bridge or the apps may retain a local cache. That cache is the practical difference between reading old mail and waiting.
Are my messages exposed during a Proton outage?
No. Messages are encrypted at rest and an availability incident means servers are unreachable rather than that data is accessible. The encryption model does not change because of an outage. The effect is entirely on availability: you cannot read, send or sync while the affected component is down.

  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Proton Mail publishes an official status feed we read it too, and let it override us in both directions.
