What Plex does

Plex organises a personal media library and streams it to phones, TVs and browsers, alongside free ad-supported channels and live TV. The media usually sits on hardware in your own home, but discovery, sign-in and remote access route through Plex's servers, so an outage can lock you out of files you physically own.

What an outage looks like

Clients fail to sign in and show an empty server list, even though the server on your network is running. Remote streaming stops while playback on the same local network continues. Artwork, titles and descriptions vanish and are replaced by filenames, because metadata is fetched from Plex. Watch Together and mobile notifications stop working.

What to do about it

Check status.plex.tv, which lists the authentication and API server, the hosted web app, remote access, media metadata and live TV guide data as separate components. If sign-in is the problem, clients already signed in keep working, so avoid signing out. Local playback usually continues via a direct connection to your server on the same network.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

Why can I not reach my own Plex server during an outage?
Plex clients authenticate against plex.tv before showing your libraries, and remote connections are brokered through Plex's servers. So even though the media and the server hardware are yours and running, the discovery and sign-in path is not. On the same local network a direct connection often still works, which is the practical workaround.
Is my media library at risk during a Plex outage?
No. Your files live on your own storage and are untouched by anything happening at Plex. What an incident affects is reaching them: sign-in, remote access and the metadata that makes the library browsable. Once the service recovers, the library returns exactly as it was, with no restoration needed on your part.
Why are my posters and titles missing?
Media Metadata is a separate component, and Plex fetches artwork, summaries and episode titles from its own servers rather than storing them all locally. When that component is degraded, the library shows raw filenames. Playback usually still works. Avoid triggering a full library refresh during the incident, since it can overwrite good local metadata.
Does an outage stop Plex live TV and free channels?
Live TV and guide data are tracked separately from the core service, so channels can fail while your personal library plays normally. The reverse also happens. Since the free channels are streamed from Plex rather than from your server, they are more exposed to an incident than your own media is.
Should I sign out and back in to fix Plex?
Not during an incident. Signing out clears the client's session, and signing back in requires the authentication server that is currently unavailable, which turns a partial problem into no access at all. Wait for status.plex.tv to clear before touching sign-in, and try a direct local connection meanwhile.

How we measure this

  • We request Plex's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Plex publishes an official status feed we read it too, and let it override us in both directions.
