Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Plaid does

Plaid is a financial data network that apps use to connect to their users' bank accounts. When someone links an account inside an app, they usually do it through Plaid Link, and the app then calls Plaid's API for data such as balances, transactions, investments, liabilities or identity details. Plaid says it connects to over 12,000 financial institutions, and developers manage their integration in the Plaid Dashboard.

What an outage looks like

Plaid Link fails partway through connecting an account and sends the user back to the bank search screen with messages such as Couldn't connect to your institution or There was a problem processing your request. Apps receive API errors like INSTITUTION_DOWN or INSTITUTION_NOT_RESPONDING, and transaction updates for linked accounts arrive late. Many incidents affect a single bank, such as Chase or Wells Fargo, rather than Plaid as a whole.

What to do about it

Check status.plaid.com, which has rows for the Production and Sandbox APIs, the Dashboard and Plaid Portal, and also posts incidents for individual banks. Developers can see per-bank connection health on the Institutions page of the Plaid Dashboard or through the Institutions API. For INSTITUTION_DOWN errors, Plaid advises having the user retry in a few hours or the next day, and to open a support ticket if errors persist.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Plaid is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 17 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

Plaid outage FAQ

Is Plaid down or is it just my bank?
Often it is just the bank. Plaid's status page lists incidents for individual institutions, such as Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo and Navy Federal Credit Union, alongside its own API rows, and an INSTITUTION_DOWN error means the bank itself is down for maintenance or technical problems. The checks on this page probe plaid.com, the company website, so they show whether Plaid's site is reachable, not whether a particular bank connection works.
My app says it can't connect my bank through Plaid. What should I do?
Try again later, then check your bank and the app. Plaid suggests signing in to your bank's website, not its mobile app, to look for a Third-Party Sharing setting under Privacy or Security, and confirming your username and password work there. If the bank is having technical problems, retry later. If Plaid itself is having problems, the app you are using can tell you about known incidents, and Plaid's Consumer Help Center offers chat support.
Will Plaid resend webhooks after an outage?
Yes, for up to 24 hours. If your endpoint returns a non-200 response or does not answer within 10 seconds, Plaid keeps retrying, waiting four times longer after each attempt starting at 30 seconds, and honours a Retry-After header on a 429 for up to 4 hours. Downtime longer than that loses webhooks, so Plaid recommends polling as a fallback and offers /beta/webhook_events/list to reconcile the past 7 days.
What does ITEM_LOGIN_REQUIRED mean? Is Plaid down?
No, it means the user needs to sign in again for that connection. Plaid returns it when a user changed their bank password or multi-factor settings, when OAuth consent expired or was revoked, or after a bank moved to an OAuth-based connection. The fix is to send the user through Link's update mode, which asks for whatever the connection needs, such as a new password or renewed consent.
Can I get Plaid status updates automatically?
Yes. status.plaid.com offers subscriptions, including text messages, and Plaid's API documentation lists two JSON endpoints: status.plaid.com/api/v2/status.json for current status and status.plaid.com/api/v2/incidents.json for current and past incidents. For the health of a specific bank, Plaid points developers to the Plaid Dashboard or the Institutions API rather than the status page.

How we measure this

  • We request Plaid's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Plaid publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
