Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What PagerDuty does

PagerDuty is a digital operations management platform that helps teams detect and respond to incidents in real time. It provides on-call scheduling, alert routing, incident escalation, and post-incident analysis. PagerDuty integrates with hundreds of monitoring tools to ensure the right person is notified when critical issues arise.

What an outage looks like

When PagerDuty is down, on-call engineers may not receive critical alerts for incidents in their infrastructure. Escalation policies fail to trigger, meaning unacknowledged alerts don't reach backup responders. The PagerDuty mobile app and web dashboard may become unresponsive, and incident creation via API or integrations will fail.

What to do about it

Check status.pagerduty.com for current incidents. Since PagerDuty is your alert delivery system, a PagerDuty outage is especially dangerous. Ensure you have a backup alerting method such as direct email alerts from monitoring tools, SMS via Twilio, or a phone tree for critical incidents.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says PagerDuty is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

PagerDuty outage FAQ

What happens to my alerts if PagerDuty is down?
Alerts sent to PagerDuty during an outage may be queued depending on the nature of the incident. However, you should not rely on this during a full outage. Events sent via the Events API may be buffered, but there is no guarantee of delivery order or timing once service is restored.
How do I get alerted about outages if my alerting tool is the one that's down?
This is the classic bootstrapping problem. Use FlareWarden to monitor PagerDuty itself and configure a non-PagerDuty notification method (like direct email or SMS) for PagerDuty alerts. Many teams maintain a backup alerting channel specifically for this scenario.
Does PagerDuty's outage affect my on-call schedule?
The on-call schedule itself is stored in PagerDuty and isn't lost during outages. However, the schedule cannot be enforced if PagerDuty can't deliver notifications. Make sure your team knows who is on-call through a shared calendar or backup schedule posted in your team wiki.
Can I use PagerDuty's status page API to monitor their uptime?
PagerDuty's status page at status.pagerduty.com provides an API and RSS feed you can subscribe to. You can also use an external monitoring tool like FlareWarden to ping PagerDuty's endpoints directly, giving you independent verification of their availability.

How we measure this

  • We request PagerDuty's public endpoint every 30 minutes from Fly.io regions across six continents — 18 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where PagerDuty publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
