What Overleaf does

Overleaf is a browser-based LaTeX editor used mainly by researchers, students and academics to write papers and theses together. Documents compile to PDF on Overleaf's servers rather than on your machine, and projects can sync out over Git. Because compiling is a server-side step, a partial outage can leave the editor usable while the PDF preview stops updating.

What an outage looks like

The editor loads but compiling fails or times out, so the PDF preview will not refresh and shows a stale version or a compile error. Projects will not open from the dashboard. Git access through git.overleaf.com is refused, breaking scripted syncs and any CI that pulls the source. Collaborative editing stops propagating, so co-authors see different text.

What to do about it

Check status.overleaf.com, which reports overleaf.com, Compiles, Git Access and AI features as separate components, so you can confirm whether only compiling is affected. Compiling runs separately from editing, so a failed compile does not mean your text is gone. If you need the PDF urgently, download the project and compile the same source locally with a LaTeX distribution.

Is Overleaf down or is my project broken?
Try opening a different project, then try a minimal document containing just a title. If a small document compiles and yours does not, the problem is your LaTeX rather than Overleaf. Overleaf's status page lists Compiles as its own component, so read that row specifically. The measurement above probes Overleaf's own health endpoint from several regions.
Will I lose my work if Overleaf goes down mid-edit?
Text you have already typed is stored server-side and versioned, so an interruption normally costs only what was in flight at that moment. The larger risk is having no local copy at all. Overleaf offers Git access and source download, and keeping a periodic copy outside the platform is the only thing that protects you through a longer outage.
Can I compile my paper somewhere else during an outage?
Yes, if you have the source. Overleaf projects are ordinary LaTeX files, so downloading the project and compiling with a local distribution such as TeX Live or MiKTeX produces the same PDF, provided you have the packages it uses. Projects cloned earlier over git.overleaf.com are already on disk and can be compiled without Overleaf at all.
Does an Overleaf outage affect Git access?
Not necessarily. Overleaf lists Git Access via git.overleaf.com as a separate component from the main site, so one can fail while the other works. That matters if you sync projects into a repository or a CI job, because those break on the Git component rather than on the editor. Check both rows before concluding the whole platform is down.
How often does Overleaf have problems?
Its status page publishes 90-day uptime per component, which is a more honest guide than any single incident. When last read, components sat between roughly 99 and 100 percent across that window, and the most recent entry was an August 2026 issue affecting AI features. The page keeps a dated incident history you can scroll back through.

How we measure this

  • We request Overleaf's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Overleaf publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
