What OverDrive does

OverDrive supplies the digital lending platform behind most public and school libraries, delivering ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and streaming video. Readers reach it through Libby, students through Sora and viewers through Kanopy, while librarians buy and manage collections in OverDrive Marketplace. One company therefore sits behind several apps that most readers do not associate with each other.

What an outage looks like

Borrowing fails at the moment of checkout, holds do not place, and titles refuse to download while the catalogue still browses normally. Library-branded lending sites can fail independently of the apps. Sign-in with a library card is a frequent failure point, and because Libby, Sora and Kanopy are separate components, one can be broken while another works.

What to do about it

Open status.overdrive.com and read the component matching the app you use: Libby, Sora, Kanopy, Magazines, OverDrive Library Sites, Device Integrations and OverDrive Marketplace are listed separately. Note that the standalone OverDrive app was retired in 2023 and readers were directed to Libby, so an old app failing is not an outage. If borrowing fails, wait rather than retrying repeatedly against a hold limit.

Is Libby down or is it my library?

Check both rows on the status page. OverDrive lists Libby and OverDrive Library Sites as separate components, so the app can be healthy while your library's own branded lending site is not, or the reverse. Because each library also controls its own catalogue and card authentication, a problem affecting only your library's collection will not appear on OverDrive's page at all.

The OverDrive app stopped working entirely. Is that an outage?

No. The standalone OverDrive app was retired in 2023 and readers were directed to Libby instead, so an old installation failing permanently is the expected result rather than an incident. Libby is the current reader for public library borrowing, and Sora is the equivalent used by schools. Neither depends on the retired app.

Does an outage affect Sora and Kanopy too?

Not automatically. Libby, Sora and Kanopy are reported as separate components, so a school using Sora can be unaffected by an incident that stops public library borrowing in Libby, and Kanopy video streaming is tracked independently of both. Check the component for the specific app rather than reading the overall banner.

Will I lose a loan or a hold during an outage?

OverDrive does not publish loan-state behaviour on its status page, so treat a checkout attempted during an incident as unconfirmed rather than failed. Repeatedly retrying is worth avoiding, since borrowing limits and hold counts are enforced per card and duplicate successful checkouts consume them. Check your loans once the relevant component is reported operational.

Can I read books I already borrowed?

That depends on whether the title was downloaded to your device before the incident and on the app you use, which OverDrive does not document on its status page. A title that still opens is reading from local storage rather than reaching the service. Avoid returning anything mid-incident, since a return that fails partway can leave the loan in an unclear state.

How we measure this

We request OverDrive's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where OverDrive publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
