What Oracle Cloud does

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is Oracle's public cloud: compute, block and object storage, networking, and the managed Oracle databases that bring most customers to it. Workloads are pinned to specific regions, so an OCI incident is usually regional rather than global, and the console at cloud.oracle.com is a separate surface from the APIs your applications call.

What an outage looks like

The console fails to load or sign-in stalls at the tenancy prompt. Instances keep running while the API and command-line tools return errors, so nothing can be launched, resized or terminated. Database connections time out for one region while another is unaffected. Object storage reads fail or slow sharply, and anything built on it, including backups, fails alongside.

What to do about it

OCI publishes per-service, per-region status at ocistatus.oraclecloud.com, and region is the detail that matters: confirm the incident covers the region your tenancy actually runs in before acting. Running instances usually survive a control-plane incident, so avoid restarting things you cannot start again while the API is failing. Oracle posts incident histories on the same site for follow-up.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

My instances are still running but I cannot manage them. Why?
That is the signature of a control-plane incident. Compute and networking that is already provisioned keeps serving traffic on the data plane, while the API and console that create, modify and delete resources are unavailable. It is a good reason not to terminate or restart anything mid-incident, because the call that brings a resource back may not succeed until the control plane recovers.
Is Oracle Cloud down everywhere or just in my region?
Almost always just one region or one availability domain. OCI status is reported per service and per region, so the useful question is whether your tenancy's region is listed, not whether Oracle has an incident somewhere. Customers running in a single region feel a regional incident as a total outage, which is why the region column is the first thing to read.
Does an OCI outage affect Oracle's other products?
Not directly. Oracle sells applications such as NetSuite and Fusion separately, and they carry their own status reporting, so an OCI infrastructure incident does not necessarily touch them. Where the two meet is shared identity and shared regional infrastructure, and an incident in either can produce sign-in failures that look like an application fault.
Will my database backups still run during an outage?
Not if the incident touches object storage. Automated backups write to storage in the same region, so a storage incident causes backup jobs to fail even when the database itself is healthy and serving queries. Check backup job status after the incident closes rather than assuming the schedule held, and re-run anything that failed if the window matters for your retention.

How we measure this

  • We request Oracle Cloud's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Oracle Cloud publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
