What Moodle does

Moodle is an open-source learning management system used by universities, schools and companies to host courses, assignments, quizzes and grades. Most installations are run by the institution itself or a Moodle Certified Partner; Moodle HQ also operates MoodleCloud, the hosted version, along with the mobile app. This page measures Moodle HQ's own services, not any single school's site.

What an outage looks like

Course pages time out or return a database connection error. Uploads of assignments fail part-way and quiz attempts do not save, which students notice at deadlines. The mobile app signs in but shows no courses. On MoodleCloud, the whole site is unreachable. When only your institution's Moodle is affected, its hosting is the cause rather than Moodle HQ.

What to do about it

Check status.moodle.com for Moodle HQ's own services and MoodleCloud. If your course site is hosted by your school or a Moodle Certified Partner, that operator's status channel is the one that matters; Moodle HQ cannot see or fix a self-hosted instance. Ask your institution's IT service desk, and keep local copies of unsaved work.

Is Moodle down for everyone or just my school?
Almost always just your school. Nearly every Moodle site is installed and hosted by the institution using it, on its own servers or through a Moodle Certified Partner, so an outage on your campus says nothing about Moodle elsewhere. This page measures Moodle HQ's own services, which is a useful check on MoodleCloud but not on any particular university's site.
Why can I reach moodle.org when my course site is down?
They are different systems. moodle.org is the open-source project's community site, and moodle.com belongs to Moodle HQ, which sells hosting and Workplace. Your course site is a separate installation run by your school. All three can fail independently, so reaching one tells you nothing reliable about the others. Ask your institution's IT service desk about the site you actually use.
Will I lose a quiz attempt if Moodle fails mid-submission?
Possibly, and it is worth assuming so. Moodle saves quiz attempts as you progress, but an interruption during submission can leave an attempt open or an upload incomplete. Keep a local copy of anything typed directly into the browser before retrying, and contact the tutor promptly if a deadline passed during the outage, since extensions are handled by your institution rather than by Moodle.
Does the Moodle mobile app work when the site is down?
Only for content already downloaded. The app talks to the same server as the browser, so if that installation is unreachable the app cannot sign in or fetch new material either. Material downloaded earlier for offline use stays readable, but submissions made in the app still need the server to accept them and will wait until it returns.

How we measure this

  • We request Moodle's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Moodle publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
