What Microsoft Copilot does

Microsoft Copilot is the AI assistant Microsoft builds into Windows, Edge and the Microsoft 365 apps, and offers standalone at copilot.microsoft.com. The consumer and business editions are different products on different plans, and Microsoft reports their health in different places, which is the main reason people struggle to confirm a Copilot outage at all.

What an outage looks like

The standalone assistant and the versions embedded in Office apps fail independently, so Copilot can answer at copilot.microsoft.com while the side panel in Word or Outlook does not. Sign-in trouble tends to present as Copilot declining to respond rather than as an obvious authentication error, because the assistant sits behind a Microsoft account. Business tenants can be affected on their own.

What to do about it

Check status.cloud.microsoft, where Microsoft Copilot is listed by name under Microsoft consumer products alongside Outlook.com, OneDrive and Microsoft 365 Consumer. Business and enterprise Copilot is not shown there: that page sends administrators to the Microsoft 365 admin centre instead, which requires signing in. Each section offers an RSS feed if you want notice without checking by hand.

Which Copilot is this, Microsoft or GitHub?

This page tracks Microsoft Copilot, the assistant at copilot.microsoft.com that also appears in Windows, Edge and the Microsoft 365 apps. GitHub Copilot is a different product, the coding assistant inside editors, and it reports on GitHub's own status page rather than Microsoft's. Searching the bare word returns both, so confirm which one you are actually using.

Why can I not find Copilot on Microsoft's status page?

Because only the consumer edition appears publicly. status.cloud.microsoft names Microsoft Copilot under Microsoft consumer products, but for business and enterprise it shows no per-product detail and points administrators to the Microsoft 365 admin centre, which requires a sign-in. If you use Copilot through a work account, your admin can see status information that you cannot.

Does a Copilot outage affect Word, Excel and Outlook themselves?

Usually only the Copilot features inside them. Microsoft tracks Microsoft 365 separately from Copilot on its status page, so documents, mail and spreadsheets can behave normally while the assistant panel fails. If the apps themselves are also failing, that is a Microsoft 365 incident rather than a Copilot one and it is reported on a different line.

How do I get notified when Copilot recovers?

Microsoft publishes an RSS feed for each section of status.cloud.microsoft, including the consumer products group that holds Copilot. That is the only push option on the public page, as there is no email subscription of the kind most vendor status pages offer. Business users get incident notifications through the Microsoft 365 admin centre instead.

How we measure this

We request Microsoft Copilot's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them. When you open this page and our last check is more than 30 minutes old, we check again on the spot; those checks update the verdict, never the availability figures.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. Our checks only change their verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where Microsoft Copilot publishes an official status feed we read it too, and the verdict is the worse of what it reports and what our checks see: a major outage of Microsoft Copilot itself is Down, trouble with one part of it is Degraded, problems at a few of a provider's many locations change nothing, and a security notice that marks nothing down is shown but changes nothing either. A reading counts for 45 minutes; we read the feed again within minutes of any change to its incidents. The availability figures above are our measurement alone.
