Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Khan Academy does

Khan Academy provides free lessons, videos and practice exercises across maths, science and test preparation, used by individual learners and by schools that assign work through it. Teachers set deadlines inside the platform, so an outage during a homework window affects a class's grades rather than only an individual's study session.

What an outage looks like

Exercises fail to load or will not accept an answer, so practice stops mid-set. Progress and mastery do not update, making completed work look undone. Videos fail to play while the surrounding page renders. Login fails, which blocks students entirely. Teacher reports and district dashboards load stale, and rostering through Clever may not sync new classes.

What to do about it

Check status.khanacademy.org, which reports Login, Exercises, Videos, Progress, Mastery, Classroom, Assignments, teacher reports and Clever rostering as separate components. For a class with a deadline, extend it rather than asking students to redo work, since progress recorded during a degraded window is unreliable and redoing exercises does not restore lost mastery.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Khan Academy is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Khan Academy outage FAQ

Did my progress save during the outage?
Progress is reported as its own component, so exercises can accept answers while the record of them lags or fails. Work that appears undone afterwards has often been recorded and simply not reflected yet. Give it time before redoing a set, and check again later rather than repeating work that may already have counted.
Is Khan Academy down or is my school network blocking it?
School networks filter aggressively and often block video sources specifically, which produces exercises that load and videos that do not. That pattern points at filtering rather than an incident. Check status.khanacademy.org, which reports Videos separately from Exercises, and try the same page on a different network before raising it with the platform.
What should teachers do about assignments due during an outage?
Extend the deadline. Students who could not load exercises have no record of the attempt, and those who completed work may have progress that did not register. Neither group can prove what they did. Extending costs a day; grading a class on data collected during a degraded window produces marks that cannot be defended.
Why can students log in but not see their class?
Classroom and rostering are separate components, and rostering through Clever syncs class membership from the school's system. If that sync is degraded, a student authenticates successfully and then lands in an account with no classes attached. It usually resolves without intervention; recreating the class manually creates duplicates that are awkward to merge.
Does Khanmigo work when the rest of the site is down?
Khanmigo is listed as its own component and fails independently of exercises and videos. It can be unavailable while the rest of the platform works normally, or keep working during a partial incident. Match the symptom to the component rather than assuming any single failure means the whole site is unavailable.

How we measure this

  • We request Khan Academy's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Khan Academy publishes an official status feed we read it too, and let it override us in both directions.
