Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Kahoot does

Kahoot is a quiz platform where a host runs a game on a shared screen and players join from their own devices at kahoot.it using a game PIN. Classrooms, training sessions and conference talks depend on it working at a fixed moment in front of a room, which is what makes an outage disproportionately painful: there is no option to try again later.

What an outage looks like

Players enter a valid game PIN at kahoot.it and get an error or a screen that never advances past joining. Hosts cannot create or launch a game, so nothing to join exists. Sign-in fails, which locks teachers out of their own saved kahoots. Search returns nothing when looking for an existing game or course, and reports from finished sessions fail to generate or export.

What to do about it

Check status.kahoot.com, which tracks login, search, creating and hosting a game, reports and the web app as separate components, so a partial fault often leaves one route working. If you are in front of a room, do not spend the session debugging: have a non-interactive fallback ready, since a hosted game needs both the host and every player device to reach the service at the same moment.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Kahoot is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Kahoot outage FAQ

Is Kahoot down or is my game PIN wrong?
A PIN only works while that specific game lobby is open, so the most common cause of a rejected PIN is a game that has already started or ended, or a host who restarted and generated a new one. Check status.kahoot.com and the per-region measurements here before assuming a platform fault, then confirm with the host that the game is still in its lobby.
Can I host a Kahoot if players cannot join?
Kahoot lists creating, hosting and playing together as one component and the web app separately, so a partial outage can leave a host able to launch a game that players cannot reach. There is no useful workaround mid-session, because both sides need the service. Treat the join step as the real test and check it before a room is waiting.
Will I lose my saved kahoots during an outage?
Saved content is not deleted by an outage. What fails is access: if login is the affected component you cannot reach your library at all, even though the material is intact. Reports from a session that was already running are a separate component again, so a game may complete while its report will not generate until the service recovers.
Does a Kahoot outage affect the school network or just Kahoot?
Compare the per-region measurements here with status.kahoot.com. School and corporate networks are a frequent cause of what looks like a Kahoot outage, because a content filter or a saturated Wi-Fi access point in one room can block joining for thirty devices at once while the platform is fine everywhere else. A failure confined to one room is a network problem, not an outage.

How we measure this

  • We request Kahoot's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Kahoot publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
