What iCloud does

iCloud is Apple's sync and backup layer: photos, files, mail, contacts, calendars, device backups and Find My, plus the web apps at icloud.com. Most people meet it indirectly, through a photo that will not upload or a device that will not restore, which is why an iCloud problem often reads as a broken iPhone rather than a service outage.

What an outage looks like

Photos and files stop syncing between devices while local copies stay intact and openable. iCloud Mail fails to send or receive, and the web apps at icloud.com hang or refuse sign-in. Device backups fail overnight and report an error the next morning. Find My shows stale locations. Sign-in with Apple stops working on third-party sites and apps that rely on it.

What to do about it

Apple publishes per-service state on its System Status page at apple.com/support/systemstatus, which is worth checking before resetting anything on the device. Files already downloaded stay available offline, so keep working locally and let sync catch up. Avoid signing out of iCloud or erasing a device during an incident, since both need the service to be working to complete cleanly.

Is it iCloud or my iPhone?

Check a second device on a different network before troubleshooting the phone. If photos also fail to sync on a Mac or through icloud.com in a browser, the problem is the service rather than the handset. If everything else syncs and only one device is stuck, look at that device: storage full, a paused sync setting, Low Data Mode, or a sign-in that needs re-authenticating.

Will I lose photos or files that had not finished uploading?

Not normally. iCloud keeps the local copy until an upload completes, so pending items sit on the device and finish when the service returns. The situation to avoid is freeing space or erasing the device while uploads are pending, because that can remove the only remaining copy. Leave the device on power and connected until the queue drains.

Does an iCloud outage stop me signing in to other apps?

It can. Sign in with Apple depends on Apple's identity service, so an incident there blocks logins to third-party apps and websites that offer it, even though those services are healthy. If a site rejects Sign in with Apple during an outage, another sign-in method on the same account usually works. Existing sessions generally stay valid.

My device backup failed. Should I run it again?

Wait for the status page to clear, then retry rather than repeatedly forcing it. Backups run automatically when the device is charging on a trusted network, so a failed overnight attempt normally succeeds on its own the following night. Do not erase, restore or set up a new device while backup is degraded, because a restore needs the service to serve the backup back to you.

How we measure this

We request iCloud's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where iCloud publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
