Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Grindr does

Grindr is a location-based social networking app for LGBTQ people, built around a grid of nearby profiles, direct chat and photo albums. It runs primarily on iOS and Android, with a web version available to paying subscribers, and paid features such as Taps and unlimited profile viewing sit behind a subscription tied to the same account.

What an outage looks like

The grid loads empty or shows a spinner where nearby profiles should be, while the app itself opens normally. Messages fail to send or arrive late, and older conversations may look complete while new ones do not sync. Photo albums will not open. Subscription features stop being recognised, so a paying account briefly behaves like a free one. One platform can fail while the other works.

What to do about it

Check status.grindr.com, which tracks The Grid, Chat, Albums, Taps, Subscriptions, Web, the iOS app and the Android app as separate components with ninety days of history. If only one component is affected, the rest of the app is usable. Avoid reinstalling the app during an incident: a fresh install forces a new sign-in, which turns a temporary problem into being locked out.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Grindr is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Grindr outage FAQ

Is Grindr down for everyone or just me?
Check the component that matches what is failing. Grindr tracks the grid, chat, albums and subscriptions separately, so an outage often affects one feature rather than the whole app. If every component reads operational, the cause is more likely your connection, location permissions being denied, or the app needing an update than a platform failure.
Should I reinstall the app if it is not loading?
No, and during an outage this is the worst step to take. Reinstalling clears the local session and forces a fresh sign-in, which cannot complete while the service is unavailable. What was a temporary loading problem becomes a lockout that lasts until the incident is resolved. Wait, or restart the app rather than removing it.
Will I lose messages sent during an outage?
Messages that failed to send generally stay in the app marked as unsent rather than disappearing, and can be retried once chat recovers. The bigger risk is duplicates from repeatedly tapping send. Conversation history already delivered is stored server side and reappears when the service returns, so an empty inbox during an incident is a sync problem rather than deletion.
Does the web version work when the app is down?
Sometimes, because they are tracked separately. Grindr lists Web, iOS and Android as distinct components, so the browser version can work when the mobile app cannot, or the reverse. Web access is limited to subscribers, so it is only an option for paying accounts, but it is worth trying before assuming everything is unavailable.
Why is my subscription not being recognised?
Subscriptions are a separate component and can fail on their own. When that service is degraded the app may not confirm your entitlement, so paid features stop appearing even though the payment is fine and the account is unchanged. Do not repurchase during an incident. Entitlements are restored automatically once the subscription service recovers.

How we measure this

  • We request Grindr's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Grindr publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
