Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Grammarly does

Grammarly is a writing assistant that checks spelling, grammar and tone as you type, delivered through a browser extension, desktop apps for Windows and Mac, mobile keyboards and an add-in for Microsoft Office. Because it runs inside other applications rather than as a destination site, an outage surfaces wherever you happen to be writing.

What an outage looks like

Suggestions stop appearing and the underlining disappears, leaving text unchecked with no visible error to explain it. The Grammarly Editor fails to load documents or will not save changes. Login fails on the desktop and mobile apps. Generative AI assistance and plagiarism detection can fail on their own while ordinary writing suggestions keep working.

What to do about it

Check status.grammarly.com, which lists the browser extension, the Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone apps, Login, Writing Suggestions and Generative AI assistance as separate components. Writing in another application carries on unaffected while checks are down, since the extension reads text in place. If the Editor will not open, avoid retyping work into a fresh document.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Grammarly is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Grammarly outage FAQ

Is Grammarly down or is my browser extension broken?
status.grammarly.com lists the browser extension separately from Writing Suggestions and Login, so start there. If the extension component is green, try a different browser or a private window: extension problems are often local, caused by an update, a conflicting extension or a permissions change on a specific site. A service-wide outage affects the desktop apps too.
Will I lose the document I was working on in the Grammarly Editor?
Work already saved stays in your account and reappears when the Editor loads again. The uncertainty is over recent edits made while the connection was failing, which may not have reached Grammarly. If you have text on screen that matters, copy it somewhere else before closing the tab rather than trusting an unsaved editor session to survive.
Does Grammarly stop working in Microsoft Word during an outage?
The add-in stops offering suggestions, but Word itself is unaffected and your document is never held by Grammarly. You keep typing, editing and saving normally; you simply lose the checking layer until the service returns. Grammarly for Microsoft Office is listed as its own component, so it can fail while the browser extension still works.
Why do basic suggestions work when the AI features do not?
They are separate systems and separate status components. Writing Suggestions covers the grammar and spelling checks, while Generative AI assistance handles rewriting and text generation, which depends on heavier infrastructure. It is common for the AI features to degrade under load or during an incident while ordinary corrections continue without interruption.
Does the Grammarly mobile keyboard work when the website is down?
The keyboard still types, since that function is handled by your phone, but the suggestions layered on top of it depends on Grammarly's service. Grammarly for Android, iPhone and iPad are listed as separate components from the web Editor, so mobile can be healthy while the site is not, or the reverse.

How we measure this

  • We request Grammarly's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Grammarly publishes an official status feed we read it too, and let it override us in both directions.
