Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Google Workspace does

Google Workspace bundles Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Meet and Chat for organisations, usually alongside Google as the identity provider for other applications. When it fails, staff lose mail, files and meetings together, and often the ability to sign in to unrelated tools that authenticate through Google.

What an outage looks like

Gmail fails to load or sends messages that sit unsent in the outbox. Drive files will not open, and Docs shows edits that do not save for other people in the document. Meet calls fail to join or drop participants. Sign-in through Google stops working for third-party applications, which is often the first symptom people report.

What to do about it

Check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, which reports Gmail, Drive, Docs, Calendar, Meet, Chat and the rest as separate products, so a Meet incident does not mean mail is affected. Offline access in Gmail and Drive keeps recently synced content available. Avoid mass-resending mail stuck in the outbox, since queued messages usually send themselves on recovery.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Google Workspace is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 18 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

Google Workspace outage FAQ

Is Google Workspace down or is it just my account?
The Status Dashboard covers each product individually and reflects widespread incidents rather than single accounts. If the dashboard shows no incidents and colleagues are unaffected, look at your own session, browser extensions or a suspended account. Signing in from a private window separates a local problem from a service one quickly.
Will emails sent during a Gmail outage be delivered?
Messages sitting in the outbox generally send once the service recovers, and incoming mail from external senders queues on their servers rather than bouncing. Resending the same message repeatedly is the main way people create duplicates during an incident. Wait for the dashboard to clear, then check sent items before sending anything again.
Can I work on Docs and Drive files while Google is down?
Only with offline access enabled beforehand, which caches recent files locally and syncs changes later. Without it, files are unreachable because they live on Google's servers. This is the argument for turning offline access on before you need it: it cannot be enabled usefully once the service is already unavailable.
Why can I not sign in to other apps during a Google outage?
Many organisations use Google as their identity provider, so applications behind that sign-in refuse new sessions even though those applications are healthy. People already signed in usually continue until their session expires. Avoid signing out of anything during the incident, because signing back in requires the identity service that is failing.
Does a Workspace outage affect consumer Gmail too?
Sometimes, but they are reported separately. The Workspace Status Dashboard covers business accounts, and consumer Gmail problems are not always reflected there. If personal accounts work while your company account does not, or the reverse, that is expected rather than contradictory, and the dashboard is the authority for the business side.

How we measure this

  • We request Google Workspace's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Google Workspace publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
