Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What GoGuardian does

GoGuardian makes classroom management and student safety software for schools, mostly on managed Chromebooks. Admin handles web filtering policy and reporting, Teacher gives staff a live view of student screens during class, Beacon flags self-harm and safety signals, Discover tracks app usage and licensing, and Hall Pass manages student movement around the building.

What an outage looks like

Teachers cannot start or see a live classroom session, or student screens show as unavailable mid-lesson. DNS Filtering is its own component under Admin, so filtering behaviour can change while the teacher dashboard is fine, or the reverse. Beacon has separate Dashboard, Settings and Pause components, so safety alerting and the console that manages it fail independently.

What to do about it

Check status.goguardian.com and match the component to the product in use. GoGuardian reports Admin, Beacon, Teacher, Discover and Hall Pass as separate services, each with its own sub-components, so an outage in one leaves the others serving. If Beacon components are affected, escalate to whoever owns student safety response at your district rather than treating it as a classroom IT issue.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says GoGuardian is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 18 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

GoGuardian outage FAQ

Is GoGuardian down, or is it the school Chromebook?
Check the component rather than the device first. GoGuardian splits Admin, Teacher, Beacon, Discover and Hall Pass, and a single failing sub-component looks identical to a broken Chromebook from a classroom. If every listed component is operational and only some devices are affected, the cause is more likely local network, device enrollment or a specific policy than a GoGuardian incident.
Does a GoGuardian outage turn off web filtering?
GoGuardian lists DNS Filtering as its own component under Admin, but does not publish what filtering does when that component fails, so do not assume it either blocks everything or allows everything. District IT should verify behaviour on a test device rather than infer it. Treat the answer as unknown until you have checked it yourself.
Teacher shows no students in my class. Is that an outage?
Possibly. Active Classroom Session and Historical Classroom Session Reports are separate components under GoGuardian Teacher, so a live session can fail while past reports load, or the reverse. An empty class list during an Active Classroom Session incident is the outage rather than a rostering mistake. Check that row before rebuilding the class.
Does a GoGuardian outage affect Beacon safety alerts?
It can, and this is the component to check first if your district relies on Beacon. GoGuardian reports Beacon Dashboard, Settings and Pause or Snooze separately. An incident there is not a classroom inconvenience, it is a gap in safety alerting, and it belongs with whoever owns student safety escalation rather than with helpdesk.
Is GoGuardian down for every district or just ours?
GoGuardian's status page reports components rather than regions or individual districts, so it cannot tell you whether your district alone is affected. Independent multi-region measurement helps here: if outside probes reach GoGuardian normally while your schools cannot, the problem is closer to your network or device fleet than to GoGuardian.

How we measure this

  • We request GoGuardian's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where GoGuardian publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
