Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Formative does

Formative is a web platform, now part of Newsela, where K-12 teachers build and assign quizzes, lessons and tests and watch each student's responses arrive in real time. Students sign in with Google, Microsoft, Clever or a class join code, and schools on a School and District license can launch assignments from Canvas or Schoology. When it fails, a live class activity or test stalls for the whole room.

What an outage looks like

Pages take much longer than usual to load, stay on a white screen, or return errors inside the app, the patterns Formative has posted in past incidents. The live responses view depends on a separate connection to ws.formative.com, so real-time grading can stop updating on its own. Sign-in also depends on your school's provider, so a Google, Microsoft or Clever failure blocks login while Formative itself is up.

What to do about it

Check status.formative.com, which lists Formative Website and Formative Application as separate components and links the AWS status page as an external service. Try a hard refresh first (Ctrl+F5 on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac), which the help center suggests for a white screen. If only your school is affected, ask IT to compare its filter with the allow-list in Formative's Technical FAQ. Support is at support@formative.com.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Formative is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 17 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

Formative outage FAQ

Is Formative down for everyone or just my school?
If the status page and outside measurements are green, the fault is usually on the school network. Formative's Technical FAQ lists dozens of hosts that firewalls, ad blockers and content filters must allow, including app.formative.com, several CloudFront addresses and ws.formative.com for live updates. A single blocked host can break one part of the app, such as student submissions or real-time grading, while everything else loads.
Does a Google Classroom, Clever or Canvas outage affect Formative?
Yes, for anyone who signs in or launches assignments through it. Students imported from Google Classroom, Clever or Microsoft sign in with that provider, so an outage there blocks login even when Formative is running. Schools on a School and District license can launch formatives from Canvas or Schoology over LTI and pass grades back, and those launches fail if the learning system is down.
Will students lose their answers if Formative goes down during a timed test?
Unfinished uploads can be lost. Formative's help center says a timed activity closes automatically when the timer runs out, and responses not fully added by then, such as audio, video or files still processing, are not saved. Teachers can pause a timed activity for the class or for one student from the responses view, and can later submit the formative on a student's behalf.
How long do Formative outages usually last?
Posted incidents have been measured in hours, not days. In March 2026 Formative reported increased loading times across both the website and the application, and marked the incident resolved about two hours after its first update. In January 2026 it posted a separate incident for increased error rates in the application. The status page history lists each incident with its timeline.
How do I contact Formative support during an outage?
Email support@formative.com, or open the Resources menu at the bottom of the left-side menu and choose Submit a support request. Paid Teacher and School and District subscribers can also start a live chat, available Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern. Formative asks for the affected emails, browser and device, network type and screenshots of any error.

How we measure this

  • We request Formative's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Formative publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
