What Flickr does

Flickr hosts photographs for hobbyists and professionals, with groups, licensing and a long-standing public archive. Many people treat it as the durable home for photo collections built over years, and its images are hotlinked across the web, so an outage breaks pictures on sites that never mention Flickr.

What an outage looks like

Photo and video serving fails, so images break on Flickr and on any external site embedding them. Uploads stall or fail partway through a batch, leaving a set half transferred. Search returns nothing while browsing works. Login fails, blocking access to private photos. Stats stop updating, and print orders through the Prints component error at checkout.

What to do about it

Check status.flickr.net, which reports Photo and Video Serving, Uploads, Search, Login, Stats, the API and Prints as separate components, so broken images do not always mean uploading is affected. Pause a large upload rather than restarting it, since a partly transferred set can produce duplicates when the batch is run again from the beginning.

Are my photos safe during a Flickr outage?
Photos already uploaded are stored and are not affected by a serving incident; they become temporarily unreachable rather than lost. The exposure is to an upload interrupted midway, which may have transferred some files and not others. Keeping your own originals rather than treating any hosting service as the sole copy remains the right practice.
Why are Flickr images broken on other websites?
Photo and Video Serving is the component that delivers image files, and a great many sites hotlink Flickr-hosted photos directly. When that component fails, those images break everywhere at once while the host page loads normally. Nothing needs fixing on the embedding site; the images return when Flickr's serving does.
Should I restart a failed Flickr upload?
Not while Uploads is reported unhealthy. A restarted batch begins again from the start and can create duplicates of files that did transfer, which then need deleting one by one. Wait for the component to recover, check what actually arrived in the photostream, and upload only the remainder.
Is Flickr down or is my account limited?
Free accounts have limits on how many photos they can hold, and hitting one produces an explicit message about the limit rather than a failure to load. An outage gives errors or timeouts instead. Check status.flickr.net first, then your account status, since limits explain far more upload refusals than incidents do.
Do Flickr outages affect the API and third-party apps?
The API is tracked as its own component, so applications that display or upload Flickr photos can break while the website works normally. Those apps usually show a blank gallery rather than an explanation. If a third-party tool is failing, check the API component before assuming the tool itself is at fault.

  • Where Flickr publishes an official status feed we read it too, and let it override us in both directions.
