What Fastmail does

Fastmail is a paid email host used by individuals and small businesses who want mail on their own domain without advertising. It serves a web client and mobile apps, and supports standard protocols directly: IMAP and POP for mail, CalDAV for calendars and CardDAV for contacts, so third-party clients connect to it without a bridge.

What an outage looks like

Mail clients report authentication or connection errors while the web client may still load, or the reverse. Fastmail tracks Mail delivery separately from Mail access, so incoming messages can stop arriving even though the mailbox opens normally and old mail reads fine. Calendar and contacts sync fail independently of mail, so a phone can show stale calendar entries while email flows.

What to do about it

Is mail lost if Fastmail is down when someone sends to me?

Usually not. Sending mail servers queue and retry for hours or days when a destination is unreachable, which is standard SMTP behaviour rather than anything specific to Fastmail. Mail sent during a delivery incident normally lands once the service recovers. If a sender received a bounce message rather than silence, ask them to forward it, because a hard bounce means something different.

My email client fails but webmail works. Is Fastmail down?

Partly, and this is a documented split. Fastmail reports Mail access over IMAP and POP as a separate component from the web client and mobile app. When that component is affected, desktop clients cannot fetch mail while the web client signs in and works. Check the IMAP and POP entry specifically rather than concluding your client is misconfigured.

Why can I stay signed in but not sign in again?

Login and sessions is its own component on the Fastmail status page. When it is affected, existing sessions keep working because they are already authenticated, while new sign-ins fail. That makes an incident look like it only affects some people, when the real split is between those already signed in and those who signed out or opened a new device.

Does a Fastmail outage stop my calendar and contacts syncing?

It can, and separately from mail. Calendar over CalDAV, Contacts over CardDAV and File storage over WebDAV are three distinct components. A phone can keep sending and receiving email while the calendar quietly stops updating, which usually shows up as a colleague's new meeting never appearing rather than as an error.

Where can I see how reliable Fastmail has been?

Fastmail publishes a 90-day uptime percentage next to each component on its status page, so you can compare mail delivery against login or calendar over the same window. That is a vendor self-report measured by the vendor. The measurement on this page is taken independently from several regions, which is why the two figures may not match exactly.

How we measure this

We request Fastmail's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them. When you open this page and our last check is more than 30 minutes old, we check again on the spot; those checks update the verdict, never the availability figures.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. Our checks only change their verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where Fastmail publishes an official status feed we read it too, and the verdict is the worse of what it reports and what our checks see: a major outage of Fastmail itself is Down, trouble with one part of it is Degraded, problems at a few of a provider's many locations change nothing, and a security notice that marks nothing down is shown but changes nothing either.
