What Duolingo does

Duolingo teaches languages through short daily lessons on the web and on iOS and Android, with streaks, leagues and hearts driving the routine. It also runs two products with their own audiences: the Duolingo English Test, used for university and visa applications, and Duolingo for Schools, which teachers use to track classes. All three are reported separately.

What an outage looks like

Lessons stop loading or hang on the loading screen, XP and streak progress from a just-finished lesson fails to register, and the app shows a connection error while the device is plainly online. Past incidents Duolingo has published describe increased errors and the web app being unavailable while the mobile apps kept working. Leaderboards and league placement can lag behind after service returns.

What to do about it

Check status.duolingo.com, which reports Duolingo, the Duolingo English Test and Duolingo for Schools on separate lines and publishes 90-day uptime for each. If you are mid-test, the English Test line is the one that matters and the main banner does not cover it. Wait rather than repeating a lesson that appeared to fail, since progress often registers once the backend catches up.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

Is Duolingo down for everyone or just me?

Check status.duolingo.com first. Duolingo publishes three separate lines, the main app, the Duolingo English Test and Duolingo for Schools, and any one of them can be degraded while the others are fine. If all three read operational, the problem is more likely your network, an out-of-date app version, or a device-specific issue than a platform outage.

Will I lose my streak if Duolingo is down?

That depends on whether your completed lesson reached Duolingo's servers before the fault, which is not something the app makes visible. If a lesson finishes but the streak count does not move, wait for service to return before repeating it, because a backend that is not recording progress will not record the repeat either. Check the main Duolingo line on the status page rather than assuming the loss is permanent.

Does a Duolingo outage affect the Duolingo English Test?

Not necessarily. The Duolingo English Test is a separate product with its own line on the status page and its own uptime history, and it has read 100 percent over periods when the main app posted lower numbers. Because the test is used for university and visa applications, check that specific component rather than the overall banner if you have a session booked.

Does the Duolingo app work when the website is down?

Often yes. Duolingo has published incidents where the web app was unavailable while the mobile apps continued to work, so switching to your phone is worth trying before concluding the service is down. The status page reports Duolingo as a single product line rather than splitting web from mobile, so the component list will not tell you which surface is affected.

How we measure this

We request Duolingo's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where Duolingo publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
