Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Descript does

Descript is an AI audio and video editor that lets people edit recordings by editing a transcript, as if it were a text document. Podcasters, video creators and marketing teams use it to record, transcribe, edit and publish in one tool, with an AI assistant called Underlord for audio and video tasks. Projects live in the cloud, so an outage can stop editing mid-project.

What an outage looks like

Projects will not open or save in the desktop or web app. Transcription stalls. Underlord tasks such as audio cleanup or video edits fail or never finish. Recordings do not upload. Exports and publishing hang. Sign-in and account changes fail. Integrations and API or MCP requests return errors, so automated workflows built on Descript stop without an obvious message.

What to do about it

Check status.descript.com, which reports Desktop App, Web App, Project Editor, Recording, Publishing, Integrations, Account Management, API / MCP and three Underlord groups for audio, video and other tasks, each with a 90-day uptime figure. If only Underlord or Publishing is affected, keep editing and retry the AI task or export once it recovers. The status page also has a Report a problem link.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Descript is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 18 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

Descript outage FAQ

Is Descript down or just the AI features?
Check the Underlord rows on status.descript.com. Descript reports Underlord - Audio, Underlord - Video and Underlord - Other separately from the Project Editor, so AI tasks can fail while manual editing works. If only Underlord is affected, carry on editing by hand and rerun the AI task after the incident is resolved.
Will I lose edits made during a Descript outage?
Do not rely on changes made while saving was failing. If the Project Editor is degraded, edits may not reach the cloud. Avoid closing the project while errors are showing, and once Descript recovers, reopen the project and check that recent changes are there before continuing, rather than assuming the last edit stuck.
Why is my export or publish stuck?
Publishing is a separate component group on the status page, so exports and publishing can stall while editing and recording work. If it shows a problem, leave the project alone and try the export again after recovery. Starting several exports at once during an incident mostly creates a queue of failed attempts.
Does a Descript outage affect recording?
Recording has its own component group. Check it before a session with a guest, because a recording that fails to upload afterwards is worse than a delayed start. If Recording is degraded, a local recording in another tool is a safer fallback, and the file can be imported into Descript once it recovers.
Is Descript down for everyone or just me?
Compare the status page with this page's regional measurements. If Descript reports everything operational and our probes reach descript.com from several regions, check your side: an outdated desktop app, a network blocking large uploads, or a signed-out session. Failures from several regions at once point to Descript.

How we measure this

  • We request Descript's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Descript publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
