Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What DeltaMath does

DeltaMath is a maths practice platform used in US secondary schools, where teachers assign problem sets and students work through them with instant feedback and worked solutions. Assignments carry due dates and completion counts towards a grade, so an outage near a deadline becomes a grading question rather than an inconvenience.

What an outage looks like

The site fails to load, or loads and then fails at the moment a student submits an answer, so the work is done but nothing is recorded. Sign-in through Google or a school account fails. Teacher dashboards show missing or stale completion data. Problems render without their diagrams, and the worked solution view stays blank.

What to do about it

Check status.deltamath.com, which tracks deltamath.com as a single component and posts incident updates there. If an assignment is due, extend the deadline rather than asking students to redo work whose submission state is unclear. Students should screenshot completed problems with a visible timestamp before closing the tab, since that is the only evidence of work done during an outage.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says DeltaMath is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

DeltaMath outage FAQ

Is DeltaMath down, or is it my school's network?
School networks filter aggressively, and a content filter blocking one domain looks identical to that site being down. If DeltaMath fails on the school wifi but loads on a phone using mobile data, the problem is the school network rather than DeltaMath. If it fails on both, check status.deltamath.com, which tracks deltamath.com as a single component.
Will work I completed during the outage be saved?
Only if the submission reached the server. DeltaMath grades each problem as it is submitted, so problems that showed a correct-answer response were recorded; problems where the page hung at submit most likely were not. The break between those two states is exactly where the outage started, which is why a timestamped screenshot is worth taking before you close anything.
What should teachers do about an assignment due during an outage?
Extend the due date rather than asking the class to redo the work. Completion data can be recorded inconsistently across students during an incident, so some will have credit and others will not for identical effort. Extending the deadline costs nothing and resolves every case at once, whereas reconciling partial submissions student by student takes far longer.
Does DeltaMath work if Google sign-in is down?
Not for accounts that sign in through Google. Many schools use Google as the identity provider for DeltaMath, so a Google authentication problem locks students out of a service that is otherwise running normally. In that case status.deltamath.com will show its component healthy and be correct, because the failure is upstream of DeltaMath rather than inside it.

How we measure this

  • We request DeltaMath's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where DeltaMath publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
