What ChatGPT does

ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational assistant, used through a browser, desktop and mobile apps for writing, coding, analysis and image generation. Businesses increasingly wire it into internal workflows and support tooling. OpenAI tracks ChatGPT separately from its developer APIs, so an outage in one does not reliably tell you anything about the other.

What an outage looks like

Failures are usually partial and often feature-specific. OpenAI's recent incidents include conversations returning errors, image generation unavailable while chat worked, file uploads failing, and an invalid_prompt error code appearing on valid input. Higher latency, timeouts and interrupted streaming have hit individual models such as gpt-5.1-mini while others answered normally. Logins and signups have also failed on their own.

What to do about it

Check status.openai.com, which lists ChatGPT separately from APIs, Codex, FedRAMP and the Ads Platform. OpenAI states that its availability metrics are aggregated across all tiers, models and error types, so your specific plan or model can be worse than the page suggests. Reload a conversation before retyping it, and if only images or uploads fail, text chat is usually still usable.

Is ChatGPT down, or is it just my account?

Check status.openai.com first, because OpenAI has logged incidents that reached only some users. Recent examples include Enterprise and Education chat errors, and a new ChatGPT app being unavailable to enterprise users without Codex permissions. OpenAI also states its published availability is aggregated across subscription tiers and models, so a page reading healthy does not rule out a problem confined to your plan.

Does the OpenAI API go down when ChatGPT does?

Not necessarily, because they are separate components on the status page. OpenAI tracks APIs and ChatGPT on different lines, so an incident affecting conversations in the app can leave API traffic untouched. Some incidents do span both, and a few have named shared dependencies such as GitHub-backed workflows. If you build on the API, read the APIs line rather than the consumer app's state.

Why does image generation fail when ChatGPT chat still works?

Image generation fails on its own regularly. OpenAI logged image generation unavailable in ChatGPT twice on a single day in July 2026, alongside separate incidents for image generation error rates and for API image generation. The text model and the image pipeline are different systems, so losing pictures while chat answers normally is the expected shape rather than a surprise.

How often does ChatGPT actually go down?

More often than most services of its size, usually in short bursts. OpenAI's own history for July 2026 records incidents on most days, nearly all resolved within hours and many touching a single feature rather than the whole product. That frequency is the reason a single failed message is worth resending before concluding that anything is broken.

How we measure this

We request ChatGPT's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where ChatGPT publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
