Why there is no uptime figure on this page
The last time we fetched ChatGPT's page directly, the origin answered and turned our client away rather than serving the page. That answer tells us the origin was reachable and responding, but it is a response about our automation, not about whether ChatGPT works for you.
A percentage built from those checks would measure our own access, so we do not publish one. What this page does show is each region's most recent result and ChatGPT's own status feed, which you can weigh yourself.

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What ChatGPT does
ChatGPT is OpenAI's conversational assistant, used through a browser, desktop and mobile apps for writing, coding, analysis and image generation. Businesses increasingly wire it into internal workflows and support tooling. OpenAI tracks ChatGPT separately from its developer APIs, so an outage in one does not reliably tell you anything about the other.
What an outage looks like
Failures are usually partial and often feature-specific. OpenAI's recent incidents include conversations returning errors, image generation unavailable while chat worked, file uploads failing, and an invalid_prompt error code appearing on valid input. Higher latency, timeouts and interrupted streaming have hit individual models such as gpt-5.1-mini while others answered normally. Logins and signups have also failed on their own.
What to do about it
Check status.openai.com, which lists ChatGPT separately from APIs, Codex, FedRAMP and the Ads Platform. OpenAI states that its availability metrics are aggregated across all tiers, models and error types, so your specific plan or model can be worse than the page suggests. Reload a conversation before retyping it, and if only images or uploads fail, text chat is usually still usable.
Is it down for everyone, or just you?

How we measure this
- We request ChatGPT's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
- A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A
403or429means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage. - A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
- Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
- Where ChatGPT publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it — and when ChatGPT blocks our checks entirely, we report the vendor's own status directly.
