Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Canvas does

Canvas is the learning management system built by Instructure and used by schools, colleges and universities to run their courses online. Students submit assignments, sit quizzes and check grades in it, while instructors post materials and mark work. Most institutions run Canvas on their own subdomain, so it sits between an entire campus and its coursework.

What an outage looks like

Course pages usually still load while one specific piece fails: New Quizzes will not open, DocViewer leaves a submitted file spinning, or an action returns an unexpected error message. Instructure has also logged sign-ins failing on Android while the web worked normally, and rostering and grade sync running hours behind. Slowness is often regional, so classmates elsewhere may see nothing wrong at all.

What to do about it

Check status.instructure.com first, then follow its per-instance uptime link: your school's Canvas can fail while the global page shows every component green. Instructure tracks Canvas separately from its SIS Platform, so missing grades and rosters usually appear there as a sync delay rather than as a Canvas outage. Take a stuck submission to your institution's help desk, which administers the instance.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Canvas is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Canvas outage FAQ

Is Canvas down for everyone or just my school?
Often just your school. Most institutions run Canvas on their own subdomain, and Instructure publishes per-instance uptime separately from the global status page, so status.instructure.com can show Canvas operational while a single campus is unreachable. Follow the per-instance uptime link on the status page before assuming a platform-wide outage, and compare notes with classmates on your campus rather than friends elsewhere.
Why have my grades not appeared when Canvas itself is working?
Grade and roster data moves through Instructure's SIS Platform, which is a separate component from Canvas on the status page. Instructure has logged rostering and grade sync running hours behind while Canvas stayed up and served pages normally. If the site loads and only the gradebook looks wrong, read the SIS Platform line rather than the Canvas one.
Does the Canvas mobile app work when the website is down?
Not reliably, and the two can fail independently in either direction. Instructure has logged incidents where sign-in failed specifically on Android devices while the web experience was unaffected, so a working browser session is no guarantee the app will authenticate. If the app will not sign in, try a browser on the same network before concluding the platform is down.
Can I still submit an assignment during a Canvas outage?
Often yes, because Canvas outages are usually partial. Instructure's recent incidents hit specific features such as New Quizzes, DocViewer and the AI tools while the rest of the course stayed usable, so the submission page can work when quizzes do not. Keep timestamped evidence of the attempt and contact your instructor or campus help desk, which controls deadline extensions.

How we measure this

  • We request Canvas's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Canvas publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
