Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What D2L Brightspace does

D2L Brightspace is the learning management system D2L sells to higher education, K-12 schools, associations and businesses. Each institution runs its own Brightspace site, often on a school domain or a name.brightspace.com address, where students open course content, submit assignments, take quizzes and check grades, and instructors build and grade courses. The Brightspace Pulse mobile app shows course content, upcoming work and grades.

What an outage looks like

Your school's Brightspace login page or homepage times out, the single sign-on step fails before reaching your courses, and Content, Assignments or Quizzes pages hang. In a quiz, answers stop getting the saved checkmark beside the question number. Tools built into courses, such as Turnitin, Kaltura, H5P or Respondus, can fail on their own, and the Pulse app stops refreshing courses and due dates.

What to do about it

Open status.d2l.com and type your school's Brightspace address into the Brightspace URL box: D2L says a disruption may not affect every client, and the page then shows your own site's status, 90-day incident history and availability graphs. If it shows nothing, contact your school's IT help desk, because D2L takes support cases from the staff each school names as Approved Support Contacts.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says D2L Brightspace is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 17 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

D2L Brightspace outage FAQ

Is Brightspace down for everyone or just my school?
Often just your school. D2L's status page warns that a disruption may not affect all clients, so type your Brightspace address into status.d2l.com instead of reading the default global view. If you do not know the address, D2L's login finder at login-finder.d2l.com can help. The checks on this page probe www.d2l.com, the D2L company website, not your school's Brightspace site, so a fault on one institution's site will not show here.
Why can't I log in to Brightspace when D2L shows no outage?
Your school's own sign-in service may be down rather than Brightspace. Many schools sign users in through single sign-on, which D2L describes as a customer managed workflow. For an SSO outage, D2L documents a fallback where administrators open a local login page at the school's Brightspace address followed by /d2l/local, and users click Forgot Password to get a temporary password. Only your school can switch that on, so watch its announcements.
Will I lose my quiz answers if Brightspace goes down?
Answers that were already saved stay saved. D2L says that if your connection is interrupted during a quiz attempt, previously saved answers remain, nothing is recorded while you are offline, and saving resumes once the connection returns. A checkmark in the question navigation panel shows which responses were saved. If the timer on an attempt runs out while you cannot get back in, D2L tells learners to contact their instructor.
Can students contact D2L support directly?
Usually not, so start with your school. D2L's support terms give the right to open support cases to each client's Approved Support Contacts, the staff a school names to D2L. Students and instructors get direct help from D2L only where the school has bought D2L's optional end user support, so your school's Brightspace help page will say which number to call. Questions about deadlines or quiz attempts go to your instructor.
Can I get notified about D2L outages?
Not as a student or instructor. When D2L's operations team confirms a disruption, it emails a D2L Impacting Event Notification to the affected school's Approved Support Contacts, and status.d2l.com is then updated with the same information. The status page has no public subscription, but its Options menu can refresh the page every minute. D2L notes the page is not a direct uptime monitor and can lag the start of a disruption.

How we measure this

  • We request D2L Brightspace's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where D2L Brightspace publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
