Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Brave does

Brave is a web browser from Brave Software, built on Chromium, the open source base it shares with Google Chrome. The browser is software installed on your device. Alongside it Brave runs online services: Brave Search and its API, the Leo AI assistant, Brave Sync, Brave News, Brave Talk, Brave VPN, Translate, the Brave Wallet, and Brave Rewards and Ads. Those services are what a Brave outage affects.

What an outage looks like

An outage hits one of Brave's online services rather than the browser, which keeps loading websites from their own servers. The status page tracks each piece separately: Brave Search and the Search API, Leo AI, Sync, News, Talk, Translate, the brave.com download and update servers, Wallet price and proxy services, and Rewards integrations with Uphold, Gemini, bitFlyer and ZebPay.

What to do about it

Check status.brave.app, linked as Status in the brave.com footer, and find the row for the service that is failing. If Brave Search is down, pick another default engine under Settings, Search Engine, or use a keyword shortcut for a one-off search. Brave VPN has no row on that page, so ask on the Brave Community support site. Sync has no account to sign back into.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Brave is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from up to 17 cities across three regions to find out where it breaks.

Brave outage FAQ

Is Brave down for everyone or just me?
Check status.brave.app, which lists brave.com, Brave Search, Leo AI, Sync, News, Wallet, Rewards and the update servers as separate rows. If the row for the feature you are using is green and other sites load normally, the problem is more likely your connection, an extension or a local setting. Brave's help center points unresolved problems to its Community support site.
Does the Brave browser work when Brave's servers are down?
Yes, for ordinary browsing. Brave is a Chromium-based browser installed on your device, and websites load from their own servers, not Brave's. What stops working is the Brave service that is down, such as Brave Search in the address bar, Leo AI, Sync or Brave News. You can switch the address bar to another search engine in Settings until Search recovers.
Is status.brave.app Brave's official status page?
Yes. The footer of brave.com links Status to status.brave.app, and Brave Search's help pages link to it too. The page names Brave as the company and points its contact link at support.brave.app. It groups components into Websites, Brave Rewards, Brave Sync, Update Servers, Brave Services, Brave Search, Brave Wallet, Brave News and Brave Translate.
What happens to Brave Sync during an outage?
Changes stop moving between devices until Sync recovers. Brave Sync has no account to sign into: devices join a Sync chain, and all Sync data goes to Brave operated servers, encrypted on the device before it leaves. Once Sync is back, changes made on any device on the chain propagate to the others for the data types you have turned on.
Does the Brave status page cover Brave VPN?
No. Brave offers Brave VPN in the browser, but status.brave.app has no VPN row. Its Brave Services group covers Brave Talk, Brave Location and Leo AI, and Brave Search has separate rows for the search engine, the Search API and the API dashboard. For a VPN problem with no incident posted, the Brave Community support site is the place to ask.

How we measure this

  • We request Brave's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Brave publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
