What BrainPOP does

BrainPOP makes short animated explainer videos with quizzes and activities for K-12 classrooms. Teachers assign topics across science, maths, social studies and English, and students watch a film then complete the follow-up quiz. Schools license it across a district and often build lesson time around it, so an interruption lands in the middle of a class period.

What an outage looks like

Videos fail to load or quizzes will not submit, and single sign-on from a school portal can fail while the site itself is reachable. BrainPOP reports its subject and language editions separately, so BrainPOP Jr., ELL, Science, Espanol or Francais can fail on their own. The iOS Apps component is separate again, so tablets can break while browsers keep working.

What to do about it

Check status.brainpop.com and look for the edition your class uses, since BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP ELL, BrainPOP Science, BrainPOP Espanol, BrainPOP Francais and iOS Apps are reported individually. If only iOS Apps is affected, move the lesson to a browser. If every row reads operational, check your district content filter and sign-on provider before assuming BrainPOP is at fault.

BrainPOP outage FAQ

BrainPOP works for me but not for my students. Is it down?
Probably not. A teacher account often reaches BrainPOP over a different path than student devices, so a district content filter, a blocked video host or a sign-on failure will hit students alone. Check status.brainpop.com first, then have a student try a different network. A real incident affects both teacher and student access together.
BrainPOP Jr. is broken but regular BrainPOP works. Is that expected?
Yes, that pattern is normal. BrainPOP lists BrainPOP, BrainPOP Jr., BrainPOP ELL, BrainPOP Science, BrainPOP Espanol and BrainPOP Francais as separate components, so an incident can affect one edition and leave the others untouched. Read the specific row rather than the headline before telling a class the whole service is unavailable.
The BrainPOP app fails but the website works. Why?
BrainPOP tracks iOS Apps as its own component, apart from the web editions, so app and browser access can diverge. When the app row is the only one affected, moving students to a browser is usually the fastest recovery. If both read operational, an app update or a device-level network restriction is the more likely cause.
Will quiz scores submitted during an outage be lost?
Treat anything submitted during a failure as unconfirmed until you can see it. If quizzes will not submit, the safest step is to have students stop rather than repeatedly retry, then check the gradebook once the affected component is marked resolved. Re-assigning a small number of quizzes costs less than sorting out duplicate or partial submissions later.
Where can I see BrainPOP's past incidents?
status.brainpop.com carries an incident history alongside the current component states, so you can see what was affected previously and how it was described. That record is more useful than a single day's reading when you are deciding whether a recurring classroom problem is BrainPOP or something inside your own network.

How we measure this

  • We request BrainPOP's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where BrainPOP publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
