Components the vendor reports as affected: Blackboard - SaaS - Global Major Outage

A component listed here does not necessarily mean a full outage — large providers routinely report maintenance on individual locations. It only affects the verdict above when the vendor marks it major or critical and our own checks also saw Blackboard fail from enough regions to rule out probe noise.

Reachability by region

Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.

What Blackboard does

Blackboard is a learning management system used by universities and colleges to run courses online. Students submit assignments, sit tests and check grades in it while instructors post materials and mark work. Most institutions use Blackboard-hosted SaaS, but the address and login page belong to the institution rather than to Blackboard.

What an outage looks like

Course pages load with no content, or sign-in accepts credentials and then hangs on a spinner. Assignment submission fails at the upload step, which is what students hit at a deadline. The gradebook shows blank. SafeAssign originality reports stop generating and Ally alternative formats fail. The mobile app stops syncing while the browser still works, or the reverse.

What to do about it

Check status.blackboard.com, which reports Blackboard SaaS by region, with separate US and Gov Cloud components, alongside SafeAssign, Ally, mobile services and the developer portal. Your institution runs its own instance, so a green global page does not rule out a problem at your school and the campus IT helpdesk will answer faster. Screenshot a failed submission with its timestamp before retrying.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

If this page says Blackboard is up but it is not loading for you, the problem is between you and them. Run a check against any URL from all 18 regions to find out where it breaks.

Blackboard outage FAQ

Is Blackboard down for everyone, or just my university?
Usually just your university. Each institution runs its own Blackboard instance on its own address, and campus-side causes such as an expired certificate, a full disk or a single sign-on failure produce exactly the symptoms of a Blackboard outage. status.blackboard.com covers the components Blackboard itself operates, so a global incident there is the less common case.
What happens if a deadline passes during a Blackboard outage?
Instructors can see submission timestamps and can extend a deadline after the fact, so an outage at a due date is normally handled by the instructor rather than by Blackboard. Email your instructor while the outage is still happening rather than afterwards, and attach a screenshot showing the error and the time. That contemporaneous evidence is what makes the request straightforward to grant.
Does the Blackboard mobile app work when the website is down?
Sometimes, because mobile services are a separate status component from Blackboard SaaS. The app can keep serving cached course content after the web interface stops responding, and it can fail on its own while the website is fine. Neither one confirms the state of the other, so if you need to submit work, try both before concluding you cannot.
Why does the status page show everything operational when I cannot log in?
Authentication for most institutions runs through the university's own single sign-on rather than through Blackboard, so a campus identity provider failure locks you out while every Blackboard component stays green. This is the most common shape of a Blackboard problem. If classmates on the same campus are also locked out but the status page is clean, report it to campus IT.

How we measure this

  • We request Blackboard's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Blackboard publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
