What Avalara does

Avalara calculates sales tax, VAT and other transaction taxes for ecommerce platforms and ERP systems, and files the returns that follow. It sits inside checkout and invoicing through the AvaTax API, so an outage does not merely take away a dashboard: orders that need a tax figure before they can be totalled stop along with it.

What an outage looks like

Checkout and invoicing stall at the point where tax is calculated, usually as a timeout rather than a clear error. AvaTax API calls hang or return errors and orders queue behind them. The AvaTax UI and the Returns Console fail to load. Exemption certificate lookups fail, so tax-exempt customers are charged tax they do not owe.

What to do about it

Check status.avalara.com, which reports Tax Calculation Service, Batch Processing, Reporting, the AvaTax UI and Returns Services as separate components, so a filing incident and a calculation incident look different there. It also lists the Avalara support phone lines as components, which is worth checking before you spend time on hold. Confirm whether your commerce platform falls back to a stored rate or blocks the order outright.

Is Avalara down, or is my ERP connector broken?

Check the Tax Calculation Service component on status.avalara.com first. If it is green and your own calls still fail, the problem is more likely credentials, a company code or the connector in your ERP than Avalara itself. Avalara runs many products behind one brand, so an incident in Returns or Exemptions can be live while tax calculation keeps working normally.

Will orders placed during an Avalara outage be taxed correctly?

That depends on your platform, not on Avalara. Some checkout integrations block the order when no tax figure comes back; others fall back to a cached or default rate and complete the sale. The second behaviour is the one to audit afterwards, because those orders carry a rate nobody verified. Find out which your platform does before the next incident.

Does an outage stop my tax returns from being filed?

Not by itself. Returns Services and the Returns Console are separate components from tax calculation, so a calculation incident does not imply a filing one. Filing deadlines are fixed dates rather than continuous processes, so a short incident rarely threatens one. A prolonged incident close to a filing deadline is worth raising with Avalara support directly.

Can customers still check out while AvaTax is not responding?

Often yes, but slowly. Many integrations wait for the tax call to time out before deciding what to do, which turns a fast checkout into a long one and drives cart abandonment even when orders eventually complete. If your platform exposes a timeout setting for the tax call, knowing its value tells you how bad checkout gets during an incident.

A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
Where Avalara publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
