What Avalara does
Avalara calculates sales tax, VAT and other transaction taxes for ecommerce platforms and ERP systems, and files the returns that follow. It sits inside checkout and invoicing through the AvaTax API, so an outage does not merely take away a dashboard: orders that need a tax figure before they can be totalled stop along with it.
What an outage looks like
Checkout and invoicing stall at the point where tax is calculated, usually as a timeout rather than a clear error. AvaTax API calls hang or return errors and orders queue behind them. The AvaTax UI and the Returns Console fail to load. Exemption certificate lookups fail, so tax-exempt customers are charged tax they do not owe.
What to do about it
Check status.avalara.com, which reports Tax Calculation Service, Batch Processing, Reporting, the AvaTax UI and Returns Services as separate components, so a filing incident and a calculation incident look different there. It also lists the Avalara support phone lines as components, which is worth checking before you spend time on hold. Confirm whether your commerce platform falls back to a stored rate or blocks the order outright.

- A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A
403or429means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage. - A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
- Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
- Where Avalara publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
