What arXiv does
arXiv is the open-access repository where physics, mathematics, computer science and related fields post preprints, often before or instead of journal publication. Researchers read and cite from arxiv.org, submit papers through it, and pull metadata and full text in bulk from export.arxiv.org. Course pages, reference managers and automated tools link to it directly.
What an outage looks like
arXiv lists the main arxiv.org site, search, export.arxiv.org, and the login and submission path as separate lines, and it flags partial problems rather than giving a single verdict. Recent entries have shown PostScript downloads temporarily disabled and the show-email and show-endorsers functions failing while browsing and submission stayed up. Bulk clients calling export.arxiv.org can fail while the website loads fine.
What to do about it
Check status.arxiv.org, which reports the website, search, export.arxiv.org and submission separately and states plainly whether users are able to log in and submit papers. Automated clients should back off rather than retry hard against export.arxiv.org, which is the endpoint most often hit in bulk. If a submission deadline is near, note that arXiv flags degradations affecting submission on its own line.

How we measure this
- We request arXiv's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — 8 of them answered the most recent check.
- A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A
403or429means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage. - A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
- Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
- Where arXiv publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
