What Alibaba Cloud does

Alibaba Cloud is the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group and the largest public cloud provider in China. It sells compute, managed databases, object storage, networking and content delivery across data centre regions in Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. Companies serving Chinese customers often run there specifically for that regional coverage.

What an outage looks like

Applications hosted on Elastic Compute Service become unreachable or fail to start. Managed database connections to ApsaraDB or PolarDB time out. Object storage reads and writes return errors, so uploads and asset delivery fail. The console will not load, so instances cannot be restarted or scaled. Effects are usually confined to one region.

What to do about it

Read status.alibabacloud.com, and change the region tab before drawing any conclusion. The page opens on one region and lists each product's state for that region alone, so the default view says nothing about where your own workloads run. Products are reported individually with seven days of history, so check the specific service your failure names rather than the banner.

Is it down for everyone, or just you?

Alibaba Cloud outage FAQ

The status page says everything is normal but my servers are unreachable. Why?
Alibaba Cloud reports status per region, and the page opens on one region tab at a time. If your instances run in Singapore or Frankfurt and you are reading the China tab, you are looking at a different set of data centres entirely. Switch to your own region first, then check the individual product rather than the summary.
Does an Alibaba Cloud outage in one region affect the others?
Usually not. Regions are separate data centres with their own infrastructure, which is why the status page is organised around them, and a regional incident leaves workloads elsewhere running normally. Services listed under Non-Regional are the exception, since those are shared and an incident there can reach customers in every region at once.
Is it Alibaba Cloud or my network route to it?
Compare from more than one place. Reaching Alibaba Cloud from outside mainland China crosses long international routes, and a routing or peering problem on the way looks identical to an outage from a single vantage point. If your region shows normal on status.alibabacloud.com and the service responds from another network, the path is the likelier explanation.
Does the console being down mean my applications are down?
No. The console is the management interface, so losing it means you cannot start, stop or reconfigure resources while everything already running continues to serve traffic. That distinction is worth knowing in advance, because the natural response of restarting something is exactly what you cannot do while the console itself is unavailable.
What do Normal, Notice and Abnormal mean on the status page?
Alibaba Cloud marks each product per region as Normal, Notice or Abnormal rather than publishing one overall verdict, and it counts how many products sit in each state for the region you are viewing. The page does not define the middle state itself, so open the entry behind a Notice to read what was actually published for that product.

How we measure this

  • We request Alibaba Cloud's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 7 of them.
  • A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A 403 or 429 means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage.
  • A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
  • Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
  • Where Alibaba Cloud publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
