Each region runs its own request from a different part of the world. A service can be up for one continent and down for another, which is usually the first sign of a routing or CDN problem.
What Aiven does
Aiven runs managed open source data infrastructure, including PostgreSQL, Apache Kafka, ClickHouse, OpenSearch and Valkey, across AWS, Google Cloud, Azure and other clouds. Customers use its console and API to provision, scale and back up services, while their applications connect straight to the database endpoints. Those two paths fail separately, and the difference decides how bad an incident is.
What an outage looks like
Usually the console and API rather than your data. console.aiven.io fails to load or loops on sign-in, Terraform runs against the Aiven provider error out, and operations that create, resize or replace nodes stall. Applications connected to existing services normally keep reading and writing throughout, so the symptom is that you cannot change anything, not that nothing works.
What to do about it
Check status.aiven.io. Aiven's published incident notices state that running services are not impacted by issues affecting its console and control plane, so confirm your application is actually failing before treating this as a database outage. Postpone provisioning, resizing and maintenance work, which is what slows first. Aiven reports a single broad component, so its page will not tell you which service or region is affected.

How we measure this
- We request Aiven's public endpoint every 6 hours from Fly.io regions across six continents — the most recent check ran from 8 of them.
- A region counts as down only when it gets no usable HTTP response. A
403or429means the origin answered and refused us, which we report as blocked, never as an outage. - A single failing region is treated as probe noise. We only change the verdict when two consecutive cycles agree.
- Response times average only the regions that actually served the page, so a timeout never inflates the number.
- Where Aiven publishes an official status feed we read it too. An all-clear from the vendor can soften an unconfirmed degradation; a vendor-declared outage only worsens our verdict when our own checks corroborate it.
